Studying in the United Kingdom is a dream for many international students seeking world-class education and cultural experiences. However, before embarking on this journey, navigating the UK student visa application process is crucial. Here’s a comprehensive guide for 2026 to help you understand the steps involved and the essential documents required.
How to Apply for a UK Student Visa
Visa applications are submitted online. You can apply from outside the UK or from inside the UK if you’re extending your student visa or switching visa types. Applications from outside the UK usually take about three weeks, while those from inside the UK generally take up to eight weeks.
If your supporting documents need to be verified, you have a criminal conviction, or you need to attend an interview, it may take longer to hear back.
Standard applications from outside the UK can be submitted up to six months before your course start date.
In the UK, student visas are sponsored by the licensed institution you’ll be studying at. You must have an unconditional offer of admission by a licensed sponsor before you can apply. This will arrive as a digital reference number called a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), which you’ll add to your visa application.
Information Required for UK Student Visas
International students need to submit several supporting documents with their student visa application. Use the UK government’s website to learn which ones you must provide.
In general, international students need the following documents:
A current passport or other valid travel documentation.
Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
Biometric information.
A valid ATAS certificate (if required by your course and nationality).
English-language proficiency proof, typically through a UKVI-approved SELT.
Proof you can pay tuition and support yourself (and any family traveling with you).
If you’ve received sponsorship for course fees and living costs over the past 12 months, you’ll need written consent for your visa application from your financial sponsor.
Proof of parental or legal guardian consent and proof of their relationship with you if you’re under 18.
Tuberculosis test results (if applying from a listed country).
Biometric Information
When you submit your application, you’ll be asked to make an appointment at a visa application center to provide fingerprints and a photo. Some students may use the UK Immigration: ID Check app to scan their documents digitally instead.
If you provided biometrics in person, you must pick up your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) after arriving. Your decision letter will indicate where and when to pick it up.
English Language Ability
You must prove your English ability through a government-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), unless your institution makes their own assessment based on your previous qualifications.
Financial Capacity
You must show you have enough money to cover your travel, tuition, and living expenses. This money must be held in your account for at least 28 consecutive days, ending no more than 31 days before your application date.
As of 2026, the required maintenance funds are:
£1,529 per month (up to nine months) for courses in London.
£1,171 per month (up to nine months) for courses outside London.
If you have been living in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months, you may be exempt from proving financial maintenance.
Healthcare Surcharge (IHS)
International students must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) upfront. For 2026, the student rate is £776 per year. This gives you access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), though you must still pay for dental, optical, and some prescription costs.
Length of Stay and Graduate Route Changes
A student visa is typically issued for the full length of your studies. However, be aware that while graduates currently receive a two-year Graduate visa (PSW), this will be reduced to 18 months for Bachelor’s and Master’s applications made on or after January 1, 2027 .
Travelling with Family
Only postgraduate students on research programs (e.g., PhDs) are permitted to bring dependents to the UK. Dependants pay the full adult IHS rate of £1,035 per year.
Visa Costs and Processing
The standard Student visa fee is £524. Decisions usually take three weeks from outside the UK, but you can opt for Priority Service (£500 extra) for a 5-day decision or Super Priority (£1,000 extra) for a next-day decision.
