When international students apply for admission to an Australian post-secondary institution, they must complete the Genuine Student (GS) requirement assessment.
Replacing the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement, the GS assessment is designed to filter for students who have genuine intentions to study in Australia. The GS is also intended for students who, upon completing their studies, have shown the skills Australia requires to apply to remain and work in Australia.
Genuine Student Requirement Questions
The Genuine Student Requirement Assessment consists of targeted questions that focus on creating a better understanding of each student’s intentions and their circumstances. The answers must be written in English and be no more than 150 words per question.
Some of the questions prospective students can expect are:
Current Circumstances:
Provide details of the applicant’s current ties to their home country, including family, community, employment, and economic situation.
Choice of Course & Country:
Explain why the applicant chose Australia as their study destination and their specific reasons for choosing this course and institution. (This must demonstrate knowledge of the program).
Benefit to Future Career:
Explain how completing this specific course will benefit the applicant’s future career and employment prospects in their home country or elsewhere.
Study History (If applicable):
If the applicant has previously studied in Australia, they must provide details of their study history and reasons for any changes.
Visa Holding (If applicable):
If the applicant holds a visa other than a Student Visa, they must explain why they are applying for a Student Visa at this stage.
In addition to the responses given in the application, it is important for students to provide additional information and supporting documents to their statements. This may include:
Employment:
Pay slips, contracts, or tax returns to prove current employment.
Economic Ties:
Bank statements or asset proof showing the student has reasons to return home.
Academic Progression:
Transcripts showing that the chosen course is a logical “next step” in the student’s education, rather than a regression to a lower level of study.
