For international students heading to Australia in 2026, success starts with proactive planning. TDhis guide provides the essential 2026 pre-departure checklist and arrival procedures to ensure you settle into your new home safely and smoothly.
2026 Pre-Departure Checklist
Before you board your plane, ensure these high-priority tasks are completed:
Passport & Visa:
Your passport must be valid for at least six months upon arrival. Ensure your Subclass 500 Student Visa is granted and you have reviewed all conditions.
Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE):
Keep a printed copy of your final eCoE; you will need it for both immigration and school registration.
Health Insurance (OSHC):
You must have active Overseas Student Health Cover starting from your arrival date.
Accommodation:
Arrange at least temporary housing for your first week before you travel. You must update your residential address with your institution within seven days of arrival.
Essential Carry-On Documents
Do not pack these in your checked luggage. You must present them to Immigration Officers for clearance:
Valid Passport and Visa Grant Notice
Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
OSHC Certificate
Academic Transcripts (Original or certified copies)
Medical Records/Prescriptions for any necessary medication
Emergency Contacts in both your home country and Australia
Arrival and Immigration Procedures
Upon landing at an Australian airport, follow these steps:
Incoming Passenger Card (IPC): Complete this card, usually distributed on the plane, honestly.
Customs Clearance: Follow signs for “Immigration and Customs Clearance” and enter the line for non-Australian passport holders.
Officer Interview: When called by Immigration Officer, present them with your passport, visa documents and the Incoming Passenger card. Have your OSHC, CoE and accommodation details with you as the officer may ask for them.
Common Questions Asked at Arrivals
Below is a list of common questions that students may be asked when they arrive at the airport by Immigration Officers:
What is your name?
Where are you from?
What is your home address?
What is your mother’s and father’s name?
What is your date and place of birth?
What school are you going to attend in Australia?
What program are you going to study and how long is the program?
What are your plans after completing the program?
Who packed your bag(s)? Do you know what’s inside the bags?
How much cash are you carrying with you?
Do you have relatives/friends/family in Australia? If yes, where do they live? If no, where will you stay?
Is someone coming to pick you up at the airport?
You should respond to all the questions asked by the Immigration Officer with simple and clear answers.
Getting to Your Accommodation
While many institutions offer complimentary airport pickup for first-time international students in 2026, you should book this at least 24–48 hours in advance.
Rideshare vs. Taxis
Australia has a robust transport network, but your choice matters for your budget.
Uber / DiDi
Budget & Speed- Widely used in major hubs like Sydney and Melbourne. Most airports have dedicated pickup zones.
Lyft
Lyft does not operate in Australia. Use Uber or DiDi instead.
Taxi (e.g., 13cabs)
Reliability- Available 24/7 at designated airport ranks. No booking required, but they do not use surge pricing.
